Pumpkin and Spice

As a pastry-chef-in-training, I love to eat, entertain and create. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and I love sharing new things I find, try and bake. This blog chronicles the adventures I have with food- at home,at school, on vacation and in my career. I’m especially excited to share my adventures this coming fall, as I will be starting a six-month externship as a baker at a luxury ski resort in Utah.

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas

Posted by pumpkin in holidaysgym

I started my morning with something new (to me) that I found at Whole Foods- Fage 2% yogurt with dippin' sauce. I'm sure that's not the actual Fage yogurtproduct name but it's a pretty accurate description. It's about a half-cup or so of plain 2% Fage, and about a tablespoon or so of "sauce"- in the case of the ones I bought, cherry and strawberry. They also had a honey one, but I only got two, just in case I didn't care for it. I usually buy the fat free Fage, and while it is delicious, the 2% was brilliant! It was creamy and rich and tangy. Yum! The sauce was jam-like and just sweet enough to compliment the tartness of the yogurt. It was so so soooo good. I really wish I'd got more of them- I'll have to add them to the shopping list for my next trip to Whole Foods! You can also see the Quaker Oatmeal Squares I had with it in the background.

Fortified with yogurt and Oatmeal Squares, I set to the daunting task of figuring out how to work the iHome alarm clock Sissy brought. There was no instruction book, and she couldn't figure out how to work it. I looked up the info booklet online, and figured out everything except why my iPod wouldn't play in it. After more investigation, it turns out that we don't have the right adaptor for it. The adaptor is that funny black plastic thing that comes in the box with your iPod, as it happens. I never knew that! I wondered what that thing was for. I called Kyle and he promised to send it.

I walked to the post office to check my mail (I have a PO Box.) Guess what I got in the mail? A package from Kyle! Yay! I had asked him to send me some t-shirts to wear to the gym and around the apartment but he also tucked in some surpises-
Ornaments for my tree! (Those straw ornaments are actually shrimps woven out of straw. Weird, yes, but I think they're cute.)

Ornaments

And the stocking my great-grandma made me when I was little.

My stocking

And my ultra-nerdy Minnie Mouse Santa hat. (Kyle has a matching Mickey Santa hat.)

Minnie Santa

Look how cute the tree is with the ornaments from home-

Christmas tree, again!

He also sent a string of Christmas lights, which I put up on the balcony, but didn't take a picture of, as it was still daylight. After decorating, I went to the gym for a kickboxing class. Unfortunately, the instructor was sick, so the class was canceled. Instead I did 30min on the eliptical and 30min on the treadmill. I'm still a little wheezy, but it's getting better...

Once home I was starving. So I did what anyone would do after just working out- I asked Sissy if she wanted to order Mexican. I know, I'm horrible. My defense is- there's a Mexican place a block away, and we had a menu for it and wanted to see if it was any good. It was research! I ordered a combo plate with a chicken enchilada, a chicken tamale and a chicken taco. It was pretty darn terrific- and huge! I only ate about half.

Mexi-licious

I really need to not undo my efforts at the gym like this... I really shouldn't  make my food choices when my blood sugar's low. I'm very impressionable when I'm hungry.

Tomorrow there's another kickboxing class in the morning (taught by a different instructor) so I'm planning on going to that. I'm a little nervous about embarassing myself by wheezing  and panting in the middle of class. Wish me luck!

Okay, I'm sure this is stupid question (I love that you are so kind in not pointing it out) but what is Fage other than yogurt? I like yogurt. Is this something I've been depriving myself of? Blogging has opened up a whole new world of delicious foods and ingredients I've TOTALLY been missing! My children on the other hand think I'm a genius, little do they know it's all just as new to me as it is to them! So school me, girlfriend. Oh and I have to admit a big mistake.....not making the 25 minute trip to Whole Foods Market! I'm going to fix that this weekend.

That was so thoughtful of Kyle! He really seems like an awesome guy. My Honey is very easy going as well.

Good luck with the kickboxing tomorrow!

i'm so used to my options of fatfree or low low fat yogurt, that the eurotastic (or often russian-tastic) yogurt here is grand. they have .5%, 1%, 2%, 5% and 8%. i know it's not as healthy, perhaps, but i like the 8% - so so creamy! and since i have little else in the way of junk food, i don't worry too much.

i love your herby tree. and you are indeed blessed with a most awesome guy. smilies/smiley.gif

Ingrid- Fage is greek-style yogurt (it's a brand- Chiobani and Okios are others. Cabot also makes one.) Greek yogurt is strained so alot of the liquid has been removed. The result is super-thick, super-creamy yogurt! Even the fat-free has a wonderful thick texture that makes it seem more decadent than regular yogurt (in my opinion.) It often comes plain, though some brands make flavors. I like it plain with crushed up sweetened cereal, though sometimes I add honey. I also use it in place of sour cream, as we don't eat enough sour cream to use a whole container- but if there's leftover yogurt, I'll eat it as breakfast!

You can approximate greek-style yogurt by lining a fine-meshed seive with a couple layers of coffee filters and placing it over a bowl. Fill the lined seive with plain yogurt, and allow it to set in the fridge overnight. You'll see that a lot of liquid has strained off, and your yogurt is nice and thick. It's not exactly the same flavor as greek yogurt (which I think is tangier than regular), but it's pretty similar if you can't find it at the store.

If you go to Whole Foods this weekend, look for these little Fage cups with dipping sauce! They're sooo yummy!

Oh goodness! This Fage discussion makes me feel like i'm really missing out! I'm especially fond of the idea of whole milk creaminess with the 2% fat content!
Greek yogurt, cheddar-apple pie.. already i'm learning new things!!
(Look at how excited i am about your foodblog, i used five exclamation points in this comment alone.)
